Who may be eligible
Since January 2025, open work permits for spouses and common-law partners are limited to specific situations, for example:
- Spouses of international students in master's programs of 16 months or longer, doctoral programs, and certain eligible professional programs.
- Spouses of foreign workers in TEER 0 or 1 occupations, or in select TEER 2 and 3 occupations in sectors with labour shortages, where the worker has enough time left on their permit.
- Spouses and partners of permanent residence applicants, and of sponsors in eligible inland sponsorship cases.
Dependent children generally no longer qualify for open work permits on this basis. Eligibility depends on the principal applicant's exact program or occupation, so get advice before you apply.
Proving a genuine relationship
Marriage or common-law documents, proof of living together, shared finances, photos and communication history all help show IRCC that your relationship is genuine. We organize your evidence so the officer can see the full picture.
How we help
- Eligibility check: we review the principal applicant's study or work details against the current criteria.
- Relationship evidence: we put together a clear, well-organized set of proof.
- Application filing: we file from inside or outside Canada, coordinated with your partner's own permit.
