Thousands of international students choose Saskatchewan every year, and many hope to make it their permanent home. The route is achievable, but it rewards planning. Here is the roadmap we walk our student clients through.
1. Choose your program with the end in mind
Not every program leads to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and program length affects how long your PGWP can be. Since late 2024, many college programs must also meet a field-of-study requirement. Before you enrol, or before you switch programs, confirm that your choice keeps your future options open.
2. Protect your status while you study
- Stay enrolled full-time during academic sessions, and know the rules for scheduled breaks.
- Apply for extensions before your permit expires.
- Respect the off-campus work limits that apply to your permit.
3. Apply for your PGWP at the right time
You generally have 180 days after receiving your completion confirmation to apply, and you need valid status at some point during that window. Get your language test done early, because most PGWP applicants now need one.
4. Turn work experience into PR options
Skilled work experience in Canada opens two strong doors: the federal Canadian Experience Class through Express Entry, and the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), which includes sub-categories for people already working in the province and for graduates of Saskatchewan institutions.
Book a strategy session in your first year of study, not your last. The decisions you make early, about your program, your jobs and your timing, have the biggest effect on your PR outcome.
